It’s Not The Destination, It’s Not the Journey, It’s a…

Everyone has likely heard of the saying, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”  And, most of us if not all of us would agree that there is truth to that saying.  In fact, if one agrees with the concept that that which is repeated is often right, then this is quite right.  But, I was recently introduced to an idea that I think may have more merit.

Let’s start with the concept that “it is not the destination”.  Most of us would agree because it, in this case let’s say life, should be about just the destination.  We can intuitively agree that the journey must also be important.

The one weak link in this theory is that the destination or one’s goals does have value and importance and if we say that the value is only in the journey then we negate the value of accomplishing and attaining our goals.

So, what if we combined the two concepts into one simple new mantra, “It’s not about the destination, it’s not the journey, it’s a journey of destinations.”

A journey of destinations… isn’t that so much better?  And, that’s what everything really is about.  Life, business, organizational development, friendships, even love.  It’s a series of discrete experiences, goals accomplished, steps taken.  Just like a line is a series of dots, so is life a series of events.

What do you think?

    Sounds good to me!

Yes, I think this is a better model. I’ve always had difficulty because I could see validity in both. And, this allows for both and celebrates both the journey and the destination without watering anything down. It seems more true to me.
