The Wee Hours of the Night

October 30, 2007

As some of you may know, I have 3 boys.  They are 2, 4 and 6 years old.  They are great and my wife and I have few real challenges except in the area of sleep.  Each of the boys has had some difficulty with having consistent uninterrupted sleep.  And, this means that Mom and Dad also enjoy interrupted sleep.  In fact, we find that we can regularly be awake during the wee hours of the morning.  And, this has led to a realization over the past several years.  Sleep affects performance.  Sure, no kidding you’re saying.  Of course, it affects performance.  Well, yes, if you have 3 hours of sleep the night before you are likely not going to be performing at your best the day after.  But, it’s more complicated than that.  If the rhythm of your sleep is consistently altered and you’re losing a little bit of sleep here and there, your performance is also infected.  You may not notice it at first but consider this.  The last few times that you were frustrated consider whether or not you were suffering from some form of fatigue.  Parents see this in terms of how their frustration and performance increase and decrease because they simply “haven’t had a good sleep in years”.

So what can be learned from this?  I think the most important thing is to observe yourself so that you know when you’re frustrated more because of your fatigue than the situation.  Or, you know that your performance is just awful and you need to recharge right away.  Sometimes we just do not recognize our own fatigue and the performance issues it creates.

Surprise Improvement

October 26, 2007

One client that I’m working with has just had a huge leap in terms of her performance.  How do you think that happened?  The truth is that a very large part of it was just starting to work with me.  And, it happened before we actually did any real work together.  So, what changed her performance was instant accountability.  Accountability is one of the three things that you need to help ensure you actually implement your goals.  Create some more accountability today!

Mentors

October 24, 2007

Everyone looks up to someone.  Who do you look up to?  I was watching the Canadian Ironman Triathlon the other day and have the greatest respect for those athletes (including a friend of mine who was in the race).  I have done triathlons before but of a much shorter duration so these high endurance athletes have my greatest respect.  So, there are a couple of things to think about here.  First, who do you look up to?  Who do you respect greatly?  And, second, and more difficult, who looks up to you?  Who out there needs you and your expertise?  Have you ever thought about that?  You might be surprised at what you discover when you spend some time reflecting on this.

The World Is So Beautiful!

October 19, 2007

The other day my second child said, “Everything is in the world is so beautiful.”  What a great comment.  There is real simplicity in it and in this case, real belief.  The obvious point to make here is how we can easily lose the wonder we had as kids.  Is that true?  Do you still have wonder?  Do you still believe the world is beautiful?  What are you teaching your kids?  What is the world teaching your kids?  A lot happens to our kids in their mental growth from the ages of 8 to 12.  They go through a truly dramatic change in terms of how they think and how they perceive the world.

For those who are a little or significantly older than 12, what are you doing to keep seeing this beautiful world.

The Search Inside

October 16, 2007

Research into how the brain works is fascinating.  The world is at the beginning of a wonderful era of understanding into what makes us “tick” from the standpoint of our heads.  Over the next several years, I can’t wait to see what is discovered.  There is going to be benefit for those who are crippled with a sickness (Depression, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and much more).  And, benefit for everyone as we all try to achieve our peak potential.

Not only is there going to be benefit of having a better understanding of how the brain and mind work, but, I believe, it will leave us with more questions than when we started.  And, this will continue to show the beauty and complexity of humans and the human condition.

Let’s hear it for all the researchers and academics pushing the world forward.

The Quest for Success

October 11, 2007

Success and human performance have always fascinated me.  I’ve always be curious as to what makes someone successful.  What makes each of us perform at our best?  Why do some people find success easily and others not so?  At it’s core, what is success?  Why is the definition of success different for this person than it is for that person.  Yes, even defining success is elusive.  As frustrating as that is when you’re trying to discover the essence of success, it is also a truly wonderful realization how many different guises success can come in.  This realization can allow each of us to find our very own unique nirvana.

These differences in how each of us defines success can be supported in so many different ways.  For example, when you look at personality testing you can see how we are each so different.  And, certainly studies on how the brain works show how much variation we have in terms of how each individual interacts with their environment.

At the end of the day, each of us is a most amazing creature with a wonderfully unique pathway for success

The First Step…

October 8, 2007

Well, let’s get started and take our first step.  Over time, I’m going to be posting a lot of my thoughts on success and human performance.  These thoughts are going to be informal and a lot less structured than my newsletter – The Performance Navigator.  Most of the time they will involve the Simply World Class topics of Mindset, Strategy and Action, but there will also be general observations and ramblings.

If you’re not already a member of my newsletter, The Performance Navigator, please head here and join me as I cover many topics on exploring success and human performance.

Cheers,  Paul

In the Beginning…

October 1, 2007

There was The Explorer’s Log or eLog.  I hope that over the journey ahead some of the thoughts and concepts that I discuss help you on your journey.  I also hope that you’ll have something important to share.  One of the things about the start of the journey is the excitement that takes place.  And, yes, I’m excited about this new journey.  I believe that there will be a lot of wonderful surprises that happen along the way.  And, I hope you’re ready for a wonderful expedition together.  There will be lots to see along the way and we’ll likely come across some challenges but I am confident that we have all the inventory we need for a truly successful journey together.
